The Dramatic Rise of Antisemitic Hate Crimes in America

Antisemitic beliefs are widely held in America and are reportedly increasingly prevalent among younger people. Of deepest concern to the Jewish community and its friends is when antisemitic thought turns into antisemitic violence and hate crimes. We are witnessing a hugely disproportionate and still-growing incidence of these crimes that are anti-Jewish, including violence and murder of Jews in America and around the world.

Religion-Based Crimes: 2023 Data

In 2023, there were 2,699 reported incidents based on religion. More than half of these (1,832) were driven by anti-Jewish bias. Incidents involving anti-Muslim (236) sentiments rose from the previous year, while anti-Sikh (156) incidents fell slightly compared to 2022.

Note: Just 2% of the US population identifies as Jewish (Pew Research). Close to 68-69% of the religion-based hate crimes in both years reported were driven by anti-Jewish bias. The number of anti-Jewish hate crimes has tripled since 2015, as of 2024 (i.e. a 300% rise) while anti-Black hate crimes increased by 81% during the same period.

Chicago Statistics

Anti-Jewish hate crimes in Chicago represented 82% of hate crimes motivated by religion in 2024, an almost 30% increase from 2023.
